WHAT A HEEL!: Those Animal Rights Activists Are Such Killjoys

Every year since 1974, folks have converged on the small English fishing village Lyme Regis (located about 155 miles southwest of London) to watch an unusual sport, known as “
conger cuddling.” Two teams of fishermen stand on wooden platforms flinging a dead 25-pound eel at each other with the goal of knocking the opposing team off its platform. The tournament raised some $5,600 annually for Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeboat crews.

But the fun came to a crashing halt this year, reports the Associated Press, when an animal rights activist threatened to draw negative publicity to the event. In an anonymous e-mail, the protester called the practice disrespectful to the dead eel and threatened to film the contest to attract adverse media attention. Note that this slimy stick-in-the-mud was too cowardly to come out into the open himself.

The Stiletto always wondered what folks without cable TV or Internet access did to pass the time. Now she knows. Well, looks like these poor folks will have to go back to morris dancing.
