NOT THE SHARPEST KNIFE IN THE DRAWER: He Needed The Money To Buy The Brooklyn Bridge
Former Congressman Ed Mezvinsky (D-IA) fell for "just about every different kind of African-based scam we've ever seen," said federal prosecutor Bob Zauzmer on the ABC newsmagazine, "20/20." Mezvinsky got taken in by the "black money" scam no fewer than three times, repeatedly traveled to Nigeria and ultimately lost more than $3 million in various swindles. Being criminally stupid doesn’t land you in prison, but this does: On the strength of his social connections to Bill and Hillary Clinton – as well as his son's romantic relationship with their daughter, Chelsea - Mezvinsky convinced people to participate in the scams and began stealing from clients. He is now serving a seven-year sentence for fraud.
