ON THE CUTTING EDGE: This New Scanner Is A “Shoe-In”
The U.S. government approved a new airport shoe-scanner that can check shoes and boots for bombs – without the passenger having to take them off. But there’s a catch, natch. Only travelers who pony up $100 a year to join the Registered Traveler program will be able to enjoy a faster, more hassle-free trip through the airport security screening procedure, The Wall Street Journal reports (subscription required). Those who sign up and pass a background check will be issued biometric cards that can be used at any airport's Registered Traveler kiosks. Iris scans or fingerprints would match the traveler with his or her ID card. Aside from being a boon to frequent fliers, rapid screening of registered travelers will enable greater scrutiny of other passengers. Like dodgy "imams" who make a big show of praying in public when airports provide private, nondenominational areas for such activity.
