WHAT HEELS!: President Ford’s Death Rates Only A “Crawl” On CBS

When news of former President Gerald R. Ford’s death broke just before midnight EST yesterday - prime time in the West - Terry Moran, anchored a special report on ABC News' “Nightline”; Bill Fitzgerald anchored a two-minute special report on NBC News that was simulcast on MSNBC, and MSNBC continued live coverage from midnight to 2 am EST; and CNN added an extra hour to Anderson Cooper’s news show to cover the 38th president’s passing. And CBS? A “crawl” at the bottom of the screen. Its coverage did not begin until the wee hours of the morning.

Newsday reports that CBS did not make any CBS news executives available for interviews to explain its “decision-making process.” This is hardly the first time CBS’s news judgment has been off covering such events:

In 2004, a CBS News producer was fired for breaking into "CSI: NY" for a special report on Yasser Arafat's death, which caused fans of that show to complain. In that case, specific instructions left to handle Arafat's death with a "crawl" were ignored.
