NOT THE SHARPEST KNIFE IN THE DRAWER: Solving This Crime Was A Piece Of Cake

Two men who unsuccessfully tried to break into the Sylva, NC, police station filched flagpoles, flags and a sign from the grounds. The suspects, who were at a birthday party serving birthday cake in a restaurant earlier that day, left cake and frosting smeared all over the damaged door of the station. Police made a positive match between the frosting on the door and the frosting on the cake found on the two thieves. The men, who had been drinking, were charged with attempted breaking and entering and misdemeanor conspiracy; one of them was also charged with possession of stolen goods, misdemeanor larceny and injury to real and personal property.
