ON THE CUTTING EDGE: Every Breath You Take, Every Move You Make
Several CA counties are monitoring convicted sex offenders on parole with ankle bracelets equipped with global positioning satellite technology that monitors where they go, how fast they are walking or driving and whether they are tampering with the device. Of the state's 3,000 parolees, 500 are now wearing the ankle bracelets with the GPS trackers. Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation expect to receive an additional $30.5 million to expand the program. Critics complain parolees' privacy rights are being violated, and the bracelets make it harder for them to get jobs. The Stiletto cheers this program, because sex offenders have already abused their privacy rights to commit heinous crimes, and it should be difficult for them to get jobs that bring them into contact with women and children – like repairmen or teachers.
