ON THE CUTTING EDGE: New Device May Help Soldiers Inured By IEDs Keep Their Limbs
The Food and Drug Administration approved a novel implanted medical device that can save severely injured limbs by connecting the ends of a severed blood vessel to restore blood flow, potentially avoiding amputation. The agency cleared the device, known as the Temporary Limb Salvage Shunt, in an accelerated review process that took less than a week because of the urgent and immediate need for battlefield use in Iraq and elsewhere.
