ON THE CUTTING EDGE: Homeless Sex Offenders Put In Mobile Homes Instead Of No-Tell Motels
Officials in Suffolk County, LI, have begun housing homeless sex offenders in county-owned trailers in nonresidential areas instead of dumping them in hotels until they find permanent residences. Each trailer will house as many as eight registered offenders, which will be placed on county-owned land at undisclosed locations and periodically moved throughout Suffolk. Newsday reports that offenders will be subject to an 8 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. curfew; each morning the county will bus them to a Department of Social Services office to look for housing. New York state law compels the Department of Social Services to assist all homeless, including sex offenders, in finding housing.
