IN MY SHOES: Gonna Try And Love Again

Nearly 8 out of 10 (79 percent) respondents in the
Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll (PowerPoint presentation) would be most likely to support a candidate who calls himself a Ronald Reagan Republican v. just 3 percent who calls himself a George W. Bush Republican. (Is there a candidate that stupid or suicidal?)

Reagan holds a special place in every conservative’s heart, much like his or her first love. But mooning over a lost love can ruin a new relationship. Consider this old joke:

A man walks out of an office building and sticks his arm out to hail a taxi just as one was going by.

Driver: Perfect timing. You're just like Frank Feldman. Now there's a guy who did everything right. He would have gotten a cab just when he needed one, too.

Passenger: Nobody’s perfect.

Driver: Well Frank could have won the Grand Slam at tennis, and could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone, and danced like a Broadway star. He never forgot anyone’s birthday, and always knew which route to take to avoid traffic jams. He knew all about what wine goes with what food, and which fork to use. He could fix anything, and he knew how to treat a woman.

Passenger: He sounds like quite an amazing fellow. How did you meet him?

Driver: I never actually met Frank.

Passenger: How do you know so much about him?

Driver: I married his freakin’ widow.

Conservatives can’t wait for a Reagan clone forever – and we have to accept the very real possibility that there may never be another Reagan. We have to learn to love again, and to make the relationship work.

I don't appreciate that snide comment about George Bush. He was a great Governor of Texas and he's a great President. The economy is booming (remember the mantra during Clinton's scandals? "It's the economy, stupid") and he's kept this country safe for 5 1/2 years despite facing a determined, ruthless and stealthy enemy. The ingratitude and rudeness that he's met with so often really grate on me. I'm tired of it. It makes me think of what Lincoln had to put up with; the unfair mischaracterizing of his policies, the demonization, the personal insults on the most juvenile level from people who call themselves journalists and professionals...I've had enough! The man is a lame duck and a short-timer; can we leave off insulting him for a few months and concentrate on...oh, how about an ENEMY?

Did not mean to offend, but politics is a popularity contest and with Bush's approval ratings in the basement he is radioactive right now. Plus, The Stiletto and other conservatives are sorely disappointed that Bush did not turn out to be the conservative he ran as in 2000 and 2004. Consider the runaway government spending, his unused veto pen, his having done nothing to secure our borders and stop illegal immigration and his trying to get Harriet Myers on the Supreme Court until we kicked up an unholy fuss. He talked the talk - until he did not need conservatives to go to the polls for anymore. So guess what? A lot of us stayed home in the mid-term elections.
