ON THE CUTTING EDGE: SXOFNDR License Plates

OH legislators are proposing a law requiring convicted sex offenders to affix a fluorescent-green license plate on their cars for easy identification. The proposal, which has bipartisan support in the state legislature, is similar to laws in several states that compel convicted drunken drivers to use yellow, pink or red plates. Opponents of the proposed law complain that the special plates would stigmatize other family members who used the sex offender’s car. Supporters counter that children who are taught what the plates mean will be able to recognize and better avoid danger. In addition, should a child be pulled into a vehicle it will be easier for police to zero in on the abductor’s car when the Amber Alert includes details about make and model, but only a partial plate number.
