ON THE CUTTING EDGE: Look Before You Leap
State representatives in SC are proposing that a woman considering abortion be given an ultrasound so she can see an image of her unborn baby before deciding to terminate its life. State law requires women who seek abortion to be given pamphlets and other information to review, and mandates a waiting period.
Rep. Greg Delleney (R-Chester and York Counties), who is sponsoring an amendment to the law to include ultrasound images as part of the pre-abortion information given to women, tells WLTX-TV 19:
"I'm just trying to save lives and protect people from regret and inform women with the most accurate non-judgemental [sic] information that can be provided."
"From the calls I've gotten, I think some people wished there was an ultrasound requirement at the time they underwent the abortion procedure."
But Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter (D-Orangeburg County) says the proposal is "too extreme" and calls it "emotional blackmail." Cobb-Hunter also claims that having the ultrasound taken will create privacy issues.
The Stiletto does not understand how a woman’s privacy is violated by seeing an image of the inside of her own body – especially as we live in an age when a woman is encouraged to have monologues with her vagina.
