WHAT HEELS!: The Sum For The Parts
Three funeral home directors in Rochester, NY, and four employees of biomedical supply company Biomedical Tissue Services are accused of stripping 36 corpses of skin, bone and other body parts before cremation. The seven have been indicted on charges of body stealing, opening graves, unlawful dissection, forgery and falsifying business documents and could each face as much as 20 years in prison. Last year, four other Biomedical Tissue Services employees – including the now-shuttered company’s owner - were charged with removing bone and tissue from 1,077 bodies at funeral homes without the permission of families. Prosecutors allege that the company made millions of dollars off stolen body parts, which can be used in dental implants and hip replacements. Among those whose remains were plundered by crooked funeral home directors: "Masterpiece Theatre" host Alistair Cooke, who died in 2004.
