WHAT A HEEL!: Assisted Living Staffer Helps Herself To Alzheimer Patient’s Ring

When Russell Mayer visited his wife of 60 years, Gladys, at assisted living facility Spring Ridge Park to take his wife to church, he immediately noticed that the diamond anniversary ring he gave her to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in 1971 was missing from her finger. In all likelihood, the 82-year-old Alzheimer's patient no longer remembered why she wore the ring – but her husband sure did, and he offered a $3,000 reward for the missing ring in a notice that he posted all over the Wheat Ridge, CO, nursing home. Months later, other staffers found out that a former employee, Ebony Butler, 22, had hocked the ring for $500. Police found the ring for sale at $1,500 at a nearby pawnshop. Butler has been arraigned in Jefferson County District Court on charges of theft from an at-risk adult, theft and giving false information to a pawnbroker.
