WHAT HEELS!: HP Sued For Spying On CNET Reporters

CNET News.com reporters Dawn Kawamoto, Stephen Shankland and Tom Krazit have filed suit against Hewlett-Packard in reporters in California Superior Court for the County of San Francisco alleging that tactics used by the computer maker to investigate the source of boardroom leaks to the media "amounted to an invasion of privacy and a violation of state rules on business practices." HP investigators are accused of tricking phone company employees into turning over confidential phone records, and of keeping Kawamoto under surveillance.

In September HP admitted to spying on the three CNET reporters, as well as on journalists from BusinessWeek, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press.

HP tried to settle the matter, but company spokesperson Ryan Donovan said its "substantial" offer to the reporters, their family members and a charity of their choice had been spurned and that HP "will defend itself."
