ON THE CUTTING EDGE: High Tech Hooker Shoes

The Aphrodite Project artist-in-residence Norene Leddy has created platform shoes with a built-in alarm with a piercing sound meant to scare off attackers, as well as "a built in GPS receiver and an emergency button that relays both the prostitute’s location and a silent alarm signal … to sex workers’ rights groups, such as PONY in New York, COYOTE in Los Angeles, or SWEAT in South Africa." In the few places where prostitution is legal, the locator and alarm signals will be transmitted to the police.

The shoes are meant "to improve the conditions of 21st century women who, despite advances in culture and technology, are now perceived to be outlaws by trade and are vulnerable to surveillance and violence."

Wired News blog Gadget Lab reports that the shoes "can be tried out at the Gallery Aferro in Newark, New Jersey in September (15th, 22nd, and 29th). Mens and women's sizes will be available, and orders will be taken for custom builds."

Editorial Note: Being just 5’1" tall, The Stiletto is partial to platform shoes that are about the same height as these shoes; being a geek, she’s ga-ga over the GPS; and being a
D-cup, she loves the idea being able to trigger a silent alarm that lets police know where she is in case some creep assumes that a woman with her figure wearing four-inch platforms is a hooker. You can’t judge a woman by her shoes. But having said that, you pretty much know what the deal is if you see a man wearing them.

I really am impressed by The Aphrodite Project. Anything to protect us from the degenerates anywhere in the world! However,
I could not wear a platform with a very steep slope, so I am hoping that the inventor will accomodate some of us women with older feet. Perhaps, running shoes will be next?
