WHAT A HEEL!: Pilfering PTA President
Triantafilitsa Mattfeld, 46, former president and a past treasurer of the parent-teacher association at Navy Elementary School, has been charged with two counts of felony embezzlement. Police believe that $180,000 was taken over a five-year period from a PTA bank account that was thought to have been closed. Authorities do not know what Mattfeld, a mother of two, did with the money. Navy parents switched from affiliation with a PTA, which pays dues to a national organization, to an unaffiliated parent-teacher organization (PTO), which maintains its own bank account, before the 2006-07 school year. Current PTO president Melissa McDaniel said the group has "adopted a set of strict financial controls to govern future PTO activity."
