WHAT A HEEL!: Forger Fakes Own Obit

Convicted forger Shawnda K. Hatfield, who was sentenced to a four-year prison term died and was cremated, according to an obituary published in The Star Press (Muncie, IN). But Hatfield, 41, was found very much alive at her home, and was arrested. Prosecutors believe the fake obit was a ruse to keep Hatfield from serving her time. An employee in the newspaper's classified advertising department, told The Associated Press that a caller purporting to be Hatfield's niece provided all the details, including the telephone number that supposedly belonged to a Florida crematory. AP reports that Deputy Prosecutor Joe Orick told Hatfield that if her relatives were involved in the scheme, "You can have a family reunion" in jail.
