NOT THE SHARPEST KNIFE IN THE DRAWER: Educational TV

For Michael W. Hobbs, 36, of Waco, KY, the Discovery Channel’s “It Takes a Thief” was must-see TV. From the program, which stars two ex-cons who show homeowners how burglars can take advantage of lax security, Hobbs learned how to break into homes. Police Maj. Steve Gregg tells The Associated Press that “He … would come to the door and ask if (the homeowner) needed any gutter help. Then the houses around there would get burglarized. That's just not coincidental.” Hobbs pleaded guilty to five counts of burglary and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

However, there have also been instances of TV resulting in a successful conviction. Some years(?) ago, a woman who had committed a holdup or something of that nature was watching TV in a fast-food place; the show that happened to be on was a dramatization/reenactment of crimes the police were trying to solve. She thought it was footage of the crime itself and turned herself in.
