ON THE CUTTING EDGE: High-Tech Bra To Detect Breast Cancer

University of Bolton (UK) professor Elias Siores has invented a "smart bra" with built-in microwave antennae to detect temperature elevations in the breast that may indicate presence of early-stage breast cancer. Siores envisions adding an audible or visual alarm would be incorporated to the bra to prompt a woman to get a mammogram. Temperature changes in the breast can also occur because of benign tumors and nonmalignant inflammatory changes, and critics say the high-tech bra may lead to false alarms and unnecessary diagnostic testing.

Editorial Note:
For reasons that are journalistically unclear, ABC News includes a photo of a woman wearing a "conventional bra" with this article, instead of the prototype.
