WHAT A HEEL!: Employee At Special Needs School Charged With Stealing From Chess Club
Sandy Jones, former business manager of the Moten Center, an elementary school in Washington, D.C. for children with behavioral and learning problems, has been charged with one count each of first-degree fraud and bank fraud for allegedly stealing $30,000 in donations to the school's chess club. The players had been selling candy and hot dogs to pay for a trip to a national tourney in Nashville, TN. When The Washington Post publicized their story, readers kicked in some $70,000. After 11 players and adult chaperons made the trip in May 2003, the unspent funds were deposited in a student bank account. Federal prosecutors allege that Jones dipped into the account from May through November of that year. “The Moten chess club, the only special-needs team participating in the tournament, finished in the middle of the field,” reports the WaPo.
