WHAT A HEEL!: Woman Fakes Cancer To Get Out Of Trial On Theft Charges

Karen M. Johnson, 43, of Woodridge, IL, who allegedly faked having ovarian cancer to evade a jury trial on felony charges of theft, has been indicted on a Class 3 felony charge of forgery, reports WBBM-TV-Channel 2 (Chicago). Johnson presented a letter to Judge Mark Dwyer ostensibly signed by a nurse from Rush University Medical Center Chicago stating that she was scheduled for surgery the day she was to stand trial for cashing a bad check at Fidelity Investments Co. in the amount of $41,000. DuPage County state's attorney's office investigators determined the letter was a forgery. If convicted of this new charge, she faces up to five years in prison.
