NOT THE SHARPEST KNIVES IN THE DRAWER: A Rat Is Not A Pig Is Not A Dog Is Not A Boy - And Neither Is A Chimp

 

When the animal shelter where two chimpanzees lived for 25 years filed for bankruptcy protection, animal rights activists set up a foundation for their upkeep.  The Vienna-based Association Against Animal Factories also petitioned the courts to declare one of the chimps, named Matthew Hiasl Pan, a person and appoint a trustee for him to “ensure he isn't sold to someone outside Austria, where he's protected by strict animal cruelty laws,” reports The Associated Press. Austria's Supreme Court thought the idea was bananas and rejected the petition. The chimps had been captured in Sierra Leone in 1982 when they were babies and smuggled into the country to be used in pharmaceutical testing but were rescued by Customs agents, who gave them to the shelter.
