WHAT A HEEL!: NY State Archivist Steals Irreplaceable Documents

Archivist Daniel Lorello, 54, who is accused of stealing hundreds of historic artifacts and documents from the New York State Library since 2002 and auctioning them on eBay, was arraigned on charges of grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and scheme to defraud. Among the items he allegedly stole were two Davy Crockett Almanacs, a letter signed by former Vice President John Calhoun and Currier and Ives colored lithographs. Lorello, who has worked as an archives and records management specialist for nearly 30 years and earned $71,732 a year, placed on administrative leave from his job in the state Education Department in Albany. Prosecutors estimated that he earned "tens of thousands" from the stolen items, reports The Associated Press. The case is reminiscent of Denning McTague, who pleaded guilty to stealing 165 Civil War documents from a National Archives and Records Administration facility in Philadelphia and fencing them on eBay.
