WHAT A HEEL!: Movie Mogul Mistreats Maid
James Jackson, former vice president of legal affairs at Sony Pictures, and his wife, Elizabeth, were sentenced for abusing their Filipina maid, who was in the U.S. illegally. Nena Ruiz, who had been awarded $825,000 in damages by a jury in civil suit against the couple in 2004, alleged that she was forced to work 18-hour days and to sleep on a dog bed, and that Elizabeth Jackson slapped her and pulled her hair. The Jacksons paid her just $300 for her work and threatened her with deportation, treatment that Assistant U.S. Attorney Wan Kim likened to "modern-day slavery." Elizabeth Jackson, who had pleaded guilty to forced labor, was sentenced to three years in prison. Her husband, who had pleaded guilty to alien harboring, was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service and pay a $5,000 fine.
