NOT THE SHARPEST KNIFE IN THE DRAWER: Copper Thief Shocked, Shocked!
A would-be copper thief in England tried to cut through an 11,000 volt power cable with a hacksaw, cutting off electricity to some 800 customers in the village of Creswell. Police arriving on the scene found the saw still embedded in the cable, along with a lit blowtorch, suggesting the perp left in a hurry. A spokesperson for the Derbyshire Police tells Reuters, “[P]utting the hacksaw through the cable would have created an almighty bang and the line would have burned for quite a few seconds, showering them with molten copper.” A search of area hospitals has not turned up anyone who has injuries consistent with cutting through a live power cable.
