THE OTHER SHOE DROPS: Updates To Previous Posts

China Takes A Page From Turkey’s Playbook: Last October, the Bush Administration’s schizoid foreign policy had the president placating the Turks one day by doing his utmost to kill the symbolic Armenian Genocide Resolution, and pissing off the Chinese the next by meeting with the Dalai Lama at the White House. At the time, The Wall Street Journal editorial board – a rat’s nest of Armenian Genocide deniers – failed to see the irony, the dichotomy or the inconsistency of these two actions. Here’s a snippet from the October 19, 2007 edition of "The Journal Editorial Report" on FOX, in which Paul Gigot, editor of The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page interviews underling Rob Pollock:

Gigot: Winners and losers, picks and pans, "Hits and Misses," it's our way of calling attention to the best and the worst of the week. … All right, Rob, next, a hit to the Dalai Lama - excuse me, for President Bush for meeting with the Dalai Lama.

Pollock: Why is it OK to offend China to meet the Dalai Lama, and why is it probably not a good idea to offend Turkey to condemn the Armenian genocide? Well, one is an ongoing problem. You could probably do some good by bringing attention to it. Another is something that's probably better left in the past. Look, if the Democrats want to run into the next election with their foreign policy being about the Armenian genocide and the Republicans go forward supporting human rights in China, I think that's a pretty good position for them to be in.

That worked out real well, huh Pollock.

The Sum For The Parts: Michael Mastromarino, 44, the ringleader of a multimillion dollar criminal enterprise that trafficked in body parts plundered from corpses at funeral homes pleaded guilty to enterprise corruption, body stealing, grand larceny and forgery and could spend the next 18 to 54 years in prison, and will forfeit $4.68 million, reports The Associated Press.

These People Totally Suck: Brazilian doctor Luiz Carlos Ribeiro, 51, got sentenced to 2.5 to 3 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of 24-year old Fabiola DePaula of complications from liposuction surgery he performed in the basement of a Framingham, MA, condominium, reports The Associated Press. Ribeiro's ex-wife, Ana Maria Miranda Ribeiro, his nurse during the procedure, served a year in prison for manslaughter, and was deported to Brazil after completing her sentence. Ana Celia Pena Sielemann, who owned the home in which the fatal procedure was performed was charged as an accessory, but was deported before being tried. Ribeiro, who is not licensed to practice medicine in the U.S., will likely be deported when he gets out of jail.
