THE DAILY BLADE: Feminism vs. Vegetarianism
One would think that hard-core feminists would have a lot in common with women who don’t eat meat. But not if those vegetarians happen to be strippers, reports The New York Times:
Two things that you can find a lot of in
But
Casa Diablo is just the latest example of selling veganism with a “Girls Gone Wild” aesthetic to draw the ire of vegans who complain that such tactics may get people to pay attention to animal cruelty, but for the wrong reasons. …
This isn’t the first time animal rights activists have been accused of sexism. Many vegans have long criticized PETA for using naked celebrities in its advertising campaigns and for staging stunts like naked protests.
Isa Chandra Moskowitz, a cookbook author, is among those who believe such images twist the vegan message. “As a feminist, I’m not keen on the idea of using women’s bodies to sell veganism, and I’m not into the idea of using veganism to sell women’s bodies,” she said.
Carol J. Adams, the author of “The Sexual Politics of Meat,” a bible of the vegan community, said that women’s rights and the rights of animals have often been aligned. …
Ms. Adams added that feminists were early adopters of vegetarianism. “Back in the ’70s, lots of women were saying, ‘I don’t want to be a piece of meat. I’m not going to eat a piece of meat,’ ” she said.
For his part, Diablo – himself a vegan for 24 years – claims: "My sole purpose in this universe is to save every possible creature from pain and suffering.”
Same Article, Different Headlines
The Washington Post ran an article about the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services temporarily freezing the green card applications to refugees, those seeking political asylum and other legal immigrants while it reassesses its policies regarding those linked to “undesignated terrorist organizations.” The article carried the sensational - and somewhat misleadiing - headline: “U.S. to Hold Off On Green Card Denials Based On Terrorism.” The headline was later changed to: “U.S.to Stop Green Card Denials for Dissidents.”
Denying green cards to terrorists makes sense. Denying green cards to dissidents, not so much. The WaPo subsequently published an editorial that clarified matters:
It’s hard to imagine a refugee from
Yet, as recounted by The Post's Karen DeYoung on Sunday, Mr. Ahmad's application for permanent residence in the United States was denied last month U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The pretext was patently absurd: Mr. Ahmad had once served in the militia of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), which USCIS officials deemed an "undesignated terrorist organization" because it had fought against the Iraqi government - the government, that is, of Saddam Hussein. Left out of the USCIS calculations were the facts that the KDP is one of the few unambiguously pro-American forces in Iraq; that the group does not appear on any U.S. government list of terrorists; and that the KDP's military activities against Saddam were encouraged and materially supported by the United States.
Well if you put it that way …
Editorial Note: In a different context, The WaPo cautions readers, “Just because something has appeared in a newspaper does not mean that is entirely accurate.” Indeed.
Jimmy Soul Wuz Wrong!
Back in 1963, two-hit wonder Jimmy Soul advised (video):
If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you
But a study of 82 couples married six months or less published in Journal of Family Psychology suggests that Jimmy had it backwards. In the study, when men were better-looking than their wives they were likelier to have negative feelings about their marriage, but when men were less attractive than their wives they were likelier to be content, reports FOX News. Previous research suggests that when assessing a potential mate, attractive women prefer a sense of humor, wealth or career success over good looks.
In The Stiletto’s experience few men think they are unattractive, thus she marvels that the psychologists who conducted this new study were able to find husbands who thought they were not as good-looking as their wives.
