NOT THE SHARPEST KNIVES IN THE DRAWER: Legislating Common Sense

A national survey of 1,500 drivers between the ages of 16 and 61 years old conducted by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. in April found that 40 percent of the teens and young admitted sending and receiving text messages while behind the wheel. Legislators in 23 are looking to ban driving while texting (DWT). Now, MN has joined WA and NJ in forbidding DWT, with a provision tucked into a transportation bill that makes it a petty misdemeanor, on par with other traffic violations. State Rep. Frank Hornstein, who sponsored the measure, tells the Pioneer Press (Minneapolis-St. Paul), “I want to really get this issue much more on the radar because people may have the reaction that I had, which is, ‘People do this while they drive?’” Sadly, they do, and some of them become eligible for the Darwin Award.

    Ooh, another acronym! ::sigh::

    I'm wondering whether 61 is the new young. Or are they telling on teens who have disclosed their texting habits?
