† She Stared Down An Armed Terrorist To Save Her Unborn Baby’s Life: After eight days of deliberations, the jury was deadlocked over the question of whether Naveed Haq, 32, met the legal definition of insanity, and King County Superior Court Judge Paris Kallas ended the deliberations by declaring a mistrial, reports The Associated Press. Haq stormed the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle in July 2006, shooting six women – one fatally – while ranting against Israel and the Iraq war. Prosecutors plan to announced retry Haq.
† The Keystone Kops Are Enforcing U.S. Immigration Laws: U.S. District Judge Robin J. Cauthron issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting enforcement of a section of an Oklahoma law meant to crack down on illegal immigration that imposes penalties on employers for failing to comply with a federal government’s E-Verify program, which flags Social Security numbers that are being used fraudulently by forged documented aliens. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Oklahoma Chamber and business groups sued because the program is voluntary, thus employers should not be subjected to state penalties, reports The Associated Press. “Through harsh civil penalties, the Oklahoma law unfairly shifts the burden of immigration enforcement from government onto the backs of business,” Robin Conrad, executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber, said in statement. In San Francisco, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce joined forces with the AFL-CIO and the American Civil Liberties Union to successfully block implementation of a federal government initiative to inform employers when suspect Social Security numbers are found.
† It Takes A Village To Support Couple’s Lifestyle: University of Pennsylvania graduate Edward K. Anderton, 25, pleaded guilty to bank fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft for financing a lavish lifestyle using his neighbors’ identities and credit cards, reports The Associated Press. Anderton remains free on bail until his sentencing, scheduled for August 29th. His ex-girlfriend, Jocelyn Kirsch, 22, is also expected plead guilty, but was placed under house arrest because of allegations that she had stolen a credit card from a co-worker at a CA Starbucks where she was working while on bail awaiting her plea.
† Are Muslims Required To Kill To Worship Allah?: Legendary sexpot actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot, 73, was convicted by a French court of discrimination and racial hatred for a letter she wrote in December 2006 to then-Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy urging that Muslims should stun sheep before ritualistically slaughtering them during the Aid al-Kabir holiday because “I've had enough of being led by the nose by this whole population which is destroying us, (and) destroying our country by imposing their ways,” reports Agence France Presse. The furor began when she republished that letter in her foundation’s quarterly newsletter, and a French anti-racism group known as MRAP sued. Bardot was fined €15,000 ($23,325) and ordered to pay another $1,555 in damages to MRAP. Her lawyer, Francois-Xavier Kelidjian wants her to appeal the conviction - her fourth under French anti-racism laws that prohibit “inciting hatred and discrimination on racial or religious or racial grounds,” reports The Associated Press.

For instance, in one home “the twister unwound a roll of toilet paper … draped it across the countertop, then rewound it in the sink. The toilet paper didn't even rip.”
