WHAT A HEEL!: Thief Had 800 Piggy Banks
After pleading guilty to charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and identity-theft, Mark Allen Davis was sentenced to 81 months in prison and ordered to pay $328,000 in restitution for helping himself to money from bank accounts of 800 people, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. According to the indictment, he had taken out ads in “more than 100 newspapers” nationwide between 2004 and 2007, “promising callers to a toll-free number that he would mail them lists of government foreclosures in their area for a one-time fee” and asked for the necessary information so he could deduct the fee from their bank accounts. He then repeatedly dipped into those accounts. To add insult to injury, none of the victims got the government foreclosures lists.
