WHAT A HEEL!: Questionable Catch

Captain Richard Quashnick, 51, who owns the Maverick, a fishing vessel featured on Discovery Channel reality show “Deadliest Catch,” pleaded no contest to illegally possessing undersized crab and fined $1,500, reports The Seattle Times:

[A]n Alaska wildlife trooper inspecting his catch over the winter discovered some of the Maverick's bairdi tanner crab were smaller than the 5.5 inches required by law …

In a telephone interview Quashnick told the paper that only a few of the 45,000 pounds of crab in his storage hold were undersized.

Finding just a “few” undersized bairdi tanner crab in 45,000 pounds is like finding a needle in a haystack. If you figure each legal crab is 2 pounds, the trooper would have had to eyeball 22,500 critters to find any that were smaller than, say, a teacup saucer. Maybe the “few” small crabs all just happened to be on top of the heap where they were easy to spot.
