† Road To Dem Party Unity Leads To Roll Call Vote: Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) tells Politico.com that “as many as half of the Democrats in the House” could vote for Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention:
“I believe there are a lot of supporters for Hillary among the superdelegates, especially now that they’ve agreed to place her name in nomination. I think half the House Democrats would probably be Hillary supporters, especially women. ... I felt she was the most experienced and the best candidate and I still feel that way.” …
A longtime Clinton adviser … estimated that the former first lady would garner between 600 and 1,200 delegates - considerably short of the approximately 1,800 she had collected at the time of her departure from the race in early June.
Clinton has stated publicly that she will vote for Obama.
† Updates To Previous Posts ("The Right To Bear Arms Belongs To Us All: Part II"): Dick Heller, the named plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court ruling that Washington, D.C.’s 32-year ban on keeping handguns in the home for self-protection is unconstitutional, is now the proud owner of a of a licensed .22-caliber revolver, reports The Associated Press. After he was fingerprinted for an F.B.I. background check in July and took a firearms proficiency test, police approved the retired security guard to keep the gun in his home. Heller has filed another lawsuit against D.C. because temporary regulations replacing the ordinance the high court struck down still require a gun to be stored unloaded and disassembled, which renders it useless in a life-or-death situation.
† Pundits To The Left! Pundits To The Right!: The New York Times reports that broadcast and cable news channels have found the cure for “dwindling ratings and aging viewers” – younger pundits:
With polls showing a surge in primary-season ballots cast by voters under 30, media outlets are out to convert the newly energized voters into viewers. On cable news, CNN promotes a “League of First Time Voters” and the Fox News Channel is covering what it calls the Y Factor with a full-time correspondent. On broadcast, NBC has assigned Luke Russert, the son of the late anchor Tim Russert, to the youth vote beat and ABC, CBS and PBS are all running stories by student journalists. …
Tiffany Wilson, 23, a graduate managing editor of the college journalist Web site Palestra.net, has appeared on the Fox News Channel more than 50 times in the past year, frequently to talk about the election. “Young people want to see their peers on television,” she said. …
“The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer” on PBS is planning to showcase student journalist reports on its Web site during the conventions. Through a partnership with Children’s PressLine, a training program in New York City for 8- to 18-year-olds, the “NewsHour” will offer student reports and podcasts online.
† Updates To Previous Posts (second item, “Sub-Par Solution For Sub-Prime Loans: Part II”): Politico.com reports that the Sacramento home owned by serial home mortgage defaulter Rep. Laura Richardson (D-CA) gas been cited by the city as a nuisance because of junk in the driveway and rotting fruit in the backyard that could attract rats. Ron O'Connor, operations manager of the Sacramento Code Enforcement Department, said that since the home is vacant, the city will assess Richardson a $150 monthly fee to keep an eye on the place so it doesn’t go to seed.
