THE OTHER SHOE DROPS: Updates To Previous Posts

Employers Hiring Forged Documented Aliens Are Lawbreakers In Other Ways, Too: The IA attorney general's office has charged the owner and managers of Agriprocessors with more than 9,000 misdemeanor violations of child labor laws, alleging Postville kosher meatpacking plant hired minors and had children younger than 16 work with dangerous equipment, reports The Associated Press. During an ICE raid in May that resulted in the arrests of 389 illegal alien employees, federal and state authorities found 32 illegal-immigrant children under age 18 - including seven younger than 16 – were handling circular saws and meat grinders, and were exposed to chlorine solutions, dry ice and other dangerous chemicals:

Charged are the company itself, Agriprocessors Inc.; plant owner Abraham Aaron Rubashkin; former plant manager Sholom Rubashkin; human resources manager Elizabeth Billmeyer; and Laura Althouse and Karina Freund, managers in the company's human resources division.

Each defendant faces 9,311 counts - one for each day a particular violation is alleged for each worker. …

The state charges are simple misdemeanors, each carrying a penalty of up to 30 days in jail and a $625 fine. …

Chaim Abrams, a manager at the plant, said in a statement that Agriprocessors “vehemently denies" the allegations and "acted in good faith on the child labor issue.”

In an unrelated matter involving Agriprocessors, the Brooklyn-based company wants the United States Supreme Court to void a vote to unionize at its distribution center on the grounds that – get this - illegal immigrants do not have the right to join labor unions, reports The New York Times.

In The Stiletto’s neck of the woods, this is what is known as “chutzpah.”

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle: Stephanie Wilson of Utica, NY, has cut a plea deal with prosecutors and will be sentenced in October on a charge of attempted third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for arming her baby’s stroller with a sawed-off shotgun, knives and a box cutter in order to intimidate another woman who she says owed her money, reports The Associated Press

Be Careful What You Wish For: The IRS giveth and the IRS taketh away from deadbeat parents whose economic stimulus checks are being “being intercepted and funneled toward the support of their children,” reports The Associated Press. The Treasury Department tells the wire service that “more than 1.4 million of the checks have been seized since the payments began last spring, and a total of $831 million has been collected by child support agencies nationwide.” BTW, if you owe back taxes your check will be cashed by the agency to pay down your tax obligation – even if you’ve been making your agreed-upon installment payments on time and were within two payments of zeroing out the debt. (It’s best not to ask The Stiletto how she knows this.)
