THE OTHER SHOE DROPS: Updates To Previous Posts

The Missing Link? (second item): In his documentary “Expelled,” Ben Stein exposes a concerted attempt to weed creationist sympathizers from the ranks of scientific institutions worldwide that uncritically accept Darwinian dogma and brook no deviation from, or questioning of, evolution orthodoxy. The latest example: Michael Reiss, a biologist and ordained Church of England clergyman agreed to resign his position as The Royal Society’s director of education after his recent suggestion that science teachers should treat creationist beliefs “not as a misconception but as a world view,” reports The Times of London, which was interpreted by senior Royal Society Fellows as being pro-creationist.

The Right To Bear Arms Belongs To Us All: Part II: After the Supreme Court ruled in June that Washington, D.C.’s 32-year-old handgun possession ban was unconstitutional, the D.C. Council began restoring residents’ Second Amendment rights incrementally. The city council was not moving fast enough to comply with the high court ruling, so the House stepped in and passed a bill sponsored by freshman Rep. Travis Childers (D-MS) that “repeals the District's semiautomatic handgun ban and overturns D.C. law requiring that firearms kept in the home be locked up and inoperable,” reports The Associated Press. The legislation, which passed 266-152 with the help of conservative Dems, also allows the city’s residents to buy guns from licensed dealers in MD and VA and wipes onerous registration regulations off the books. AP notes: “The legislation is unlikely to be taken up in the Senate in the few remaining weeks of this session, but it served both to give lawmakers a pro-gun vote shortly before the election and demonstrate the continuing political clout of the NRA.”

Guns Don’t Kill People; Illegal Immigrants With Guns Kill People: More than a year after the execution-style murders of three college students hanging out in a courtyard behind Mount Vernon School in Newark, NJ, Rodolfo Godinez, 25; his 17-year-old brother, Alexander Alfaro; Jose Lachira Carranza, 29; Melvin Jovel, 19; Shahid Baskerville, 16; and  Gerardo Gomez, 16 have been indicted on charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery and weapons offenses, reports The New York Times. Carranza and Baskerville are also charged with sexually assaulting a fourth victim who survived and is currently in protective custody because the accused all reputedly have ties to the Central American MS-13 gang. If convicted, they face multiple life sentences.

Independence Day 2008: Casting aspersions on people’s patriotism is a pretty dicey affair, since one can never know what’s in another’s heart or thoughts. Actions, however, can be judged – as when singer Rene Marie sang “Lift Ev'ry Voice & Sing” (AKA “the Black National Anthem”) at Denver mayor John Hickenlooper's annual State of the City address in place of the American national anthem, which clearly pledges fealty to Africa not to America. And while our national anthem was playing in the background, Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard was caught on tape stating that “I don't even celebrate that [expletive]. I'm black,” reports Sports Illustrated. The Stiletto is waiting with bated breath to see how Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson – who wrote a column titled, “A Special Brand Of Patriotism” - explains this.

Updates To Previous Posts (second item): Top Hillary Rodham Clinton fundraiser Lynn Forester de Rothschild announced she is resigning from the Democratic National Committee's Platform Committee and supporting John McCain’s candidacy because, “I believe that Barack Obama, with MoveOn.org and Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean, has taken the Democratic Party - and they will continue to -  too far to the left,” reports The Associated Press. “I'm not comfortable there,” de Rothschild tells AP. She also believes that “the McCain-Palin government will be a centrist government. It's not going to be an ideological government.”
