WHAT A HEEL: Dead Men Write No Wills
Prosecutors in Allentown, PA, charge that attorney John Karoly Jr., 58 conspired with doctor, John J. Shane, 72, to present phony wills in Northampton County Orphans' Court that named Karoly Jr. as a beneficiary of his brother Peter’s multimillion dollar estate, reports The Legal Intelligencer. Eleven years after the Karoly brothers dissolved their joint law practice, Peter and his wife Lauren Angstadt died in a small plane crash, and the indictment charges that the two intended to divvy up their estate amongst their siblings – with the exception of John Karoly. But Karoly claimed he had discovered wills for his brother and sister-in-law in a storage facility that had been updated and witnessed by Shane in 2006 – wills that were forged to enable John Karoly “to unlawfully benefit from their tragic deaths” by “subvert[ing] the true intentions of the victims,” Acting U.S. Attorney Laurie Magid said in a statement. John Karoly's attorney, Robert Goldman, counters that his client is being targeted because of his “successful lawsuits against errant police officers.”
