WHAT A HEEL: Why Is This Identity Theft Different From All Other Identity Thefts?

John Kenneth Leighnor Jr. has pleaded guilty to to one count of mail fraud and three counts of aggravated identity theft for trying to cash in bank accounts intended for the families of Holocaust victims, reports The Associated Press. Currently an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institute in Petersburg, VA, Leighnor apparently used obituaries and abandoned Swiss bank accounts to find the name of someone who perished in the Holocaust and then claim the money in the account as the victim’s descendant. Though the odious scheme was ultimately unsuccessful - Leighnor was unable to pry a single franc from Swiss bankers – he is looking at as many as 26 years in prison.
