ON THE CUTTING EDGE: YouTube Symphony Orchestra

Think of it as YouTube meets "American Idol": The online video sharing site has recruited conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, music director of the San Francisco Symphony, and a panel of experts from the world's finest orchestras to evaluate video submissions from budding classical musicians, whom viewers will then vote in or out of an orchestra being assembled to perform "Internet Symphony No. 1 — Eroica," by Tan Dun, the Academy Award-winning composer of the score for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," at Carnegie Hall on April 15, 2009. Aspiring musicians can submit their entries through January 28th.

"[T]his is an exciting project because we're giving our users interaction with people that they haven't had before," YouTube marketing executive Ed Sanders tells The Associated Press. "Classical music has embraced YouTube a lot more than people think."
