WHAT A HEEL: Morally Handicapped Matron

Instead of seeing Edwin Rivera, a severely disabled 22-year-old, safely home from his special-needs school, his escort Linda Hockaday, 51, left him on the bus so she would be on time for an appointment, reports The Associated Press. Rivera, who has cerebral palsy and cannot speak, spent more than 17 hours alone on the vehicle, which was parked in a Brooklyn, NY, bus yard – the driver hadn’t double-checked that no one had been left behind. With the ambient temperature ranging from 15 to 30 degrees during Rivera’s ordeal, his body temperature had dropped some three degrees but was in stable condition after medical treatment. Hockaday was fired from her matron’s job, and could be sentenced to as much as seven years in prison for reckless endangerment.
