GOODY TWO SHOES: The Two Faces Of Mitt

Commenting on ex-governor of MA and rebuffed presidential candidate Mitt Romney having  re-upped with the board of directors of hotel chain Marriott International, The New York Times editorial board notes this irony: In the Republican primaries, he “proudly professed a rigid hostility to comprehensive immigration reform” and “[n]ow he has joined a leading company in an industry that is utterly dependent on immigrant labor, much of it undocumented.” The Times also points out that Romney has “more than once … personally benefited from illegal labor - from a few Guatemalan immigrants doing landscaping at his home.”

This is not the first time Romney the candidate and Romney the board member were on opposite sides of an issue. (Surprise, surprise.)

Back in July 2007 Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody reported that anti-porn activists took Romney to task for claiming not to know anything about Marriott's revenue from in-room pay-per-view sex videos during his nearly 10 years on the Board of Directors in the 1990s. The Romney campaign claimed that his role on the board was “an advisory capacity on financial matters” but CBN learned that he had been paid more than $100,000 a year to sit on Marriott’s board, and when he quit the Marriott board in 2002 to run for governor of MA, J.W. “Bill” Marriott, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Marriott International said he had been “an active, hands-on Director” and “visionary leader.” In addition to professing to be anti-amnesty, Romney was campaigning on a family values platform.

Oh, and let’s not forget that Romney also campaigned as a populist (second item) – even though as a venture capitalist he bought failing companies, liquidated them and evaporated people’s jobs.
