GOODY TWO SHOES: Revenge Of The Nerds
Media layoffs are at their highest since the dot-com bubble burst in 2001, reports The Hollywood Reporter: “Layoffs in the media industry, which includes film and TV companies, amounted to 28,083 last year, the highest since 43,420 staffers were let go in 2001.”
Back in the day when dead dot-coms were being buried in electronic graveyards like F’d Company (itself now deceased), scores of unemployed tech workers would congregate and commiserate on Netslaves to kick ourselves for accepting ultimately worthless stock options in lieu of cold hard cash, for working 20-hour days to make some smooth-talking grifter’s “vision” a reality, for enduring the vermin-infested workspaces start-ups tended to rent in crappy, hard-to-get-to downtown areas in NYC.
Press Gazette reports that the MSM now has its own monument to irrelevancy, Traditional Media RIP:
The site … was created by Dialect, a Canadian web marketing agency, to track, minute by minute, the decline of print and other traditional media.
It offers links to various stories from around the web about newspaper job cuts, publishing company bankruptcy …
One of the site’s creators, Nik Szymanis tells Press Gazette: “Since virtually all the news we consume is via the internet, it seemed only fitting to create this memorial online.”
Editorial Note: A major reason people get their news online is because they need to fact-check the MSM, and to do additional research when salient facts are missing from an article. Take, for instance, this 302-word Associated Press article about the mayor of Racine, WI, being arrested for attempting to sexually assault a child. We learn that Gary Becker “served two terms as alderman before taking four years off, then was elected mayor in 2003 [and] ran unopposed in 2007.” Becker’s political affiliation is never stated by AP - or by MSNBC (the new media subsidiary of old media NBC), The Journal Times (Racine) and the Journal Sentinel (Milwaukee). To its credit, Wonkette mentioned it straight away: "Here’s a liberal Democratic slob named Gary Becker ..." (warning: the language gets rather salty after the lede).
