WHAT A HEEL: Heard Of The “Soup Nazi?” Meet The “Cookie Racist.”

Gothamist - among others - picks up on a Fox News (WNYW-Channel 5, New York) report about Greenwich Village bakery Lafayette French Pastry - which is frequented by celebrities and has been featured on shows like "Sex and the City" – selling "Drunken Negro Face" cookies. Insisting he meant no insult, owner Ted Kefalinos called his creation “Obama cookies” on Inauguration Day in “honor” of President Barack Obama.

It’s hard to tell from Arnold Diaz’s interview (video link) whether Kefalinos is defiant or clueless – or both – but the consumer reporter should have taken a bite from the cookie to see what it was made of. There could have been even more to the story than meets the eye.

Now here’s an interesting twist: When Kefalinos first put the cookies out for sale on Martin Luther King Day, he sold all two dozen of them. It was only after Diaz’s report that he received threats against his life and bakery, which the NYPD is looking into. Oh, and he has apologized – but still seems unsure why his culinary creation caused such a commotion.

Editorial Note: This is not the first time someone associated Obama with a cookie.
