GOODY TWO SHOES: A Hothouse Flower In The Oval Office
The New York Times reports that “on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket” even though he “hates the cold,” because he “had cranked up the thermostat.” (Not to worry: Obama doesn’t sweat.) Senior adviser David Axelrod explains: “He’s from Hawaii, O.K.? He likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.”
But just 24 hours earlier, Obama - who has lived in New York, Boston and Chicago for many more years than he lived in Hawaii, and famously scolded his fellow Americans that “[w]e can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees” if we want to combat climate change – complained that Sidwell Friends School, the private school his daughters attend, was closed because of “some ice” and suggested Washingtonians could use “some flinty Chicago toughness” – which prompted one resident to point out that “DC public schools were open for business, after a two-hour delay” and that “if he and his wife had chosen to send their children to a public DC elementary school (of which there are several fine choices, despite the overall system’s terrible reputation), Malia and Sasha would have gone to school today.” For its part, The Washington Post noted that the icy roads were particularly treacherous to navigate, and reminded Obama that while “hair-trigger school closings” inconvenience other area parents “[Y]ou have it easy. At least one parent has the flexibility to work from home.”
Editorial Note: Depending on the species, orchids require daytime temperatures no hotter than 80 to 90 degrees and nighttime temperatures no colder than 50 to 60 degrees to thrive, so any delicate flower in the Oval Office should do just fine at a temperature of 68 degrees.
