IN MY SHOES: Every Bubble Bursts Eventually

Taking advantage of the third annual “20at20” promotion – for two weeks one can see 20 Off-Broadway shows for $20 each, if there are any tickets left 20 minutes before the show - The Heel, an Ivy-educated attorney with a prestigious New York firm, and The Stiletto spent Saturday soaking up high and low culture in NYC.

Our day started with a matinée performance of Gazillion Bubble Show. Even if you don’t know anything about the physics of bubbles, what “bubble artist” Ana Yang can do with soapy water is astounding:

The Stiletto’s only quibble: She counted only 819 billion bubbles.

We ended up at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to see the New York Empire Trio (Hristo Popov, violin; Kalin Ivanov, cello; Joshua Pierce, piano) perform a program of Haydn, Rachmaninov, Dvořák and two compositions by Bulgarian composer Roumi Petrova, one of which – “Fanfare for Obama” - was a world premiere.

The musical ode to Obama was introduced by composer/producer Christopher Kaufman, who rambled tediously on for at least five minutes about social networking site Obama Music Arts and Entertainment, which “collects and shares …  original films, songs, photography, poetry, music videos, cartoons, op/ed commentary, fabric artistry, paintings … all inspired by or about Barack Obama.” Kaufman promised to post a clip of the piece on OMAE, but has not as of this writing.

According to the program notes Petrova was “inspired by the feelings of joy and hope enthused by the election of the new American president”:

The piece opens with unison as a symbol of unity, which grows into a joyful theme in the rhythm of 8/8 (3 2 3), the composer's signature rhythm. The middle section contrasts with somber overtones as a reflection of the challenges that lay ahead. The reprise brings back the theme of joy and hope, and at the very end one may hear the opening sounds of the American anthem.”

The Stiletto did discern a riff reminiscent of the opening notes of our national anthem at the end of the composition but was unable to hear the unity, much less joy or hope. This forgettable work will be made more so when Obama bursts the “change” bubble by continuing to allow “renditions,” which permit enemy combatants to be interrogated by foreign intelligence operatives who are not bound by the U.S. Army Field Manual; the “quagmire” shifts from Iraq to Afghanistan; and the years drag on without a satisfactory answer to the quandary of what to do with detainees at Gitmo and other military prisons.

    Un-F*$&ing-believable!!!

After his first few words I probably would have stood up and screamed at him for attempting to bore a house-bound group of paid attendees seeking entertainment to have to listen to his religious pulpit-speech. After all, let’s just call it what it is. These liberal scumbags would be the first to complain if a Christian breathed “Merry Christmas” to someone else within his earshot and accuse him of hyper-religiosity. These mass-hypnotized cultists are the worst offenders foisting their religiosity on others.
