WHAT A HEEL: Stealing From The Blind

Minneapolis-St. Paul transit police arrested John Harold Richardson on a charge of felony theft from person for stealing a Braille laptop computer from a blind passenger on a Minneapolis bus on November 18th, reports Pioneer Press:

Video from onboard bus cameras showed Richardson reach down under the Emily Zitek's seat and take her backpack … Richardson's photo was circulated to Metro Transit officers and bus drivers and released to media. …

The backpack contained a specialized Braille laptop computer valued at about $6,500.

Metro Transit Police Captain Michael LaVine said the laptop was not recovered.

Richardson told officers that he threw the laptop in a dumpster after his mother said she saw him on the news.

This story has a happy ending for Zitek: When he learned about the theft, former Sen. Mark Dayton (D) bought Zitek a new laptop, and the owners of the frozen and prepared-foods purveyor Simek's Quality Foods supplied new software.
