WHAT A HEEL: Pulp Fiction

Woodland, CA, dentist Mark Anderson is on trial for 20 counts of sexual battery, including 19 felony charges, for allegedly touching the breasts of more than a dozen female patients purportedly to treat temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), reports The Sacramento Bee:

During closing arguments, defense lawyer Michael Rothschild told jurors that Anderson had massaged the patients' chest muscles around their breasts in an effort to relieve pain and soreness …

A prosecution expert testified during the trial that some dentists believe chest muscles are related to TMJ problems.

Anderson, Rothschild said, had written out instructions for TMJ massages for at least one woman's husband to follow and had offered to demonstrate his techniques, he said.

"Molesters don't say to women, 'Go home. Get your husband. Bring him down here. I'll show him how I molest you,'" Rothschild told the jurors. …

Earlier in the day, Deputy District Attorney Robert Gorman told the jury there was no mistaking what Anderson had done.

Some women had reported that Anderson reached into their bras, Gorman said, and some said the dentist had commented on their breasts.

"My mother used to say that actions speak louder than words," Gorman said. "He had a sexual intent when he touched these women."

The Stiletto checked several sites describing TMJ and its treatment. Neck and shoulder massage to reduce overall stress, and directly massaging the cheek and jaw muscles to relieve pain and tightness is one of the non-pharmaceutical treatments – but none of the sources she consulted corroborates the claims made by Anderson’s defense.
