WHAT A HEEL: Fraud, The Final Frontier

University of Florida professor Samim Anghaie and three members of his family are accused of submitting fraudulent proposals and invoices to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and receiving millions of dollars in research contracts - which was allegedly deposited into personal bank accounts instead, reports The Associated Press:

Court papers say that since 1999, the company [New Era Technology] has been awarded 13 government contracts and bank records show that from 2000, NASA, the Air Force and the Department of Energy deposited nearly $3.4 million into the corporate account. The papers say the money was used to buy cars and real estate.

The federal government filed the documents as part of a motion seeking to seize six cars; six pieces of real estate in Fort Lauderdale, Gainesville and Tampa, Fla., and Manchester, Conn.; and several bank accounts. …

Steve Orlando, a spokesman for the University of Florida, said Dr. Anghaie had been placed on leave with pay.
