WHAT A HEEL: Exec Fakes Cancer To Get Out Of Lawsuit

Howard Richman, a former vice president of Biopure Corp. pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice charge for evading a lawsuit filed in 2005 by the Securities and Exchange Commission by pretending he had terminal colon cancer, reports The Associated Press. During the ruse, which spanned the months from October 2006 through July 2007, Richman impersonated his physician in a phone call to his attorney that the cancer had spread and that he was undergoing chemotherapy so that she would inform the judge. Based on the false information, U.S. District Judge Patti Saris approved Richman's request to postpone a final judgment, which ended the lawsuit for all intents and purposes. Richmond is scheduled to be sentenced June 10th, and can get up to 10 years in prison.
