NOT THE SHARPEST KNIFE IN THE DRAWER: A Perfect Storm Of Stupidity
After David Maksimik, 59, robbed the People's United Bank in Darien (CT) bank with a gun and fake grenade strapped to his waist, he rear-ended another car while making his getaway, then got home by way of a bus, a taxi and a ride bummed from his sister. Then finding his 53-year-old roommate unconscious on the floor he called 9-1-1, reports the Connecticut Post:
Not only did Stamford police find his roommate dead, an apparent suicide, but they became suspicious of Maksimik's story. They knew Darien had sent out a bulletin on the bank robbery, so they contacted that department. Police discovered the bank's $3,745 still inside a binocular bag on Maksimik's bed.
Maksimik then waived his right to an attorney and gave a full confession, according to an affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Fred Reeder.
Maksimik is being charged with bank robbery by force, a federal offense, as well as with state charges of first-degree robbery, third-degree larceny, criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, reckless driving and evading responsibility. Maksimik was released from federal prison in January 1997 after being convicted of a 1991 bank robbery in Stamford.
