NOT THE SHARPEST KNIFE IN THE DRAWER: In Praise Of Potholes

Mike Parrish, a city councilor of Navestock, a village 25 miles northeast of London, proposes leaving potholes on some roads unfilled as a traffic calming measure, reports The Associated Press:

[T]he plan would help return many of the town's smaller roads to their original status as country lanes. …

Some residents have asked for speed bumps, but potholes would serve the same purpose, the councilor said. The plan would be to repair potholes on certain roads to encourage their use, while letting those on other roads serve as a deterrent.

One opponent thinks the plan is daft because the affected roads are not well-lit and people will not be able to spot the potholes at night, endangering cyclists and damaging cars.
