GOODY TWO SHOES: Dems And Do-Overs
When “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams asked if Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor would “have back if she had it to redo” her controversial statement in a 2001 lecture at the UC-Berkeley school of law (“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life.”), President Barack Obama definitively declared, "I'm sure she would have restated it.":
The Associated Press points out that Obama did not indicate “how he knew” she would have used a better choice of words, so in that spirit The Stiletto is also certain that:
† Former Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) would restate this: "When Strom Thurman ran for president, we voted for him! We're proud of it! And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all of these problems over all of these years either." (2002);
† Director of the White House's National Economic Council and former Harvard University President Lawrence Summers would restate this: "There are three broad hypotheses about the sources of the very substantial disparities ... with respect to the presence of women in high-end scientific professions. ... [T]he first is what I call the high-powered job hypothesis. The second is what I would call different availability of aptitude at the high end, and the third is what I would call different socialization and patterns of discrimination in a search. And in my own view, their importance probably ranks in exactly the order that I just described." (2005); and
† Former Sen. George Allen (R-VA) would restate this: "This fellow here over here with the yellow shirt, Macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent... Let's give a welcome to Macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia." (2006).
But if the success of Summers and Sotomayor proves one thing, it’s that Dems always get a second chance after missteps and malapropisms - if not a Get Out of Hell Free Pass (video link) – a double standard pushed by liberal race-baiters and their MSM enablers that people are wise to, and tired of, especially now that we have elected a president who claims to be “post-racial.”
Editorial Note: On “Fox News Sunday” Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC), one of the “Gang of 14,” succinctly told moderator Chris Wallace why he is troubled by Sotomayor’s identity-based superiority complex:
What she said is that based on her life experiences, that she felt a Latina woman, somebody with her background, would be a better judge than a guy like me, a white guy from South Carolina.
And it is troubling, and it’s inappropriate, and I hope she’ll apologize. And if I had said something like that or someone with my background and profile, we wouldn’t be talking about this nomination going forward.
But we’ll listen to what she has to say. But she’s got to prove to me that if I found myself in court with a Latina woman in front of her I’d get a fair shake, and that’s up to her to do.
Graham also said that he doesn’t think Sotomayor is a racist, and that Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh should give the ad hominem attacks a rest: “They interject themselves in the debate. They’ve got an audience to entertain, and Newt’s a political commentator. I’m a United States senator.”
